tread seperated from tire at 70mph. WTF!?!

on saturday i was driving on the turnpike when i started to hear a slight thumping noise. my exit was only a couple of miles away so i slowed from 80mph to 70 and at the exit i would stop and see what was in my tire. about a minute later there was a big BANG so i pulled over to discover that my tire came apart, and taking part of my bumper and fender with it. i just found this odd that most of the tread seperated from the tire. the tire was hissing a bit when i was changing it, but really didnt lose pressure too quickly.

the only section of tread remaining...

the carnage that was caused...

popped out the corner light and scraped up the paint quite nicely...

maybe a little difficult to see, but it even bent the bottom of the door and rocker panel.

of course this had to happen after the wife has been on my case about getting a new car. a couple of days earlier the rear seatbelt stopped retracting and about 2 hours before this when pulling off to a rest area, the car stalled out. still dont know why that happened.

3rd Generation

I remember readin in a post that you usually purchase used tires... that could be suspect.

Aside from that though this is insane and I've never seen anything like it before!

The tire had to be rotted and cracked. That just doesn't happen.

You bought used tires?

This happens quite a bit on rigs that use retreads, usually not that often on passenger cars, but not many people buy retreads.

i dont think you can get retread passenger car tires anymore!!! regardless if you were driving at 70-80 mph then no wonder it happened so fast. I had some slight tread seperation on my suburban and the day after i noticed it half the width of the tire tread had seperated. My tire went from having a flat contact patch to looking like a rollerblade wheel. Thats just one of those things what is the date code on that tire? it is recommended that a tire not be used after it is 7 years old soooo.......

its funny people mentioned used tires. yes i buy them and there is one on my car, but this wasnt it nor was it a retread. another one from this set developed a bulge from a broken belt several months ago and is collecting dust in the garage. this is a cooper touring tire and drove very nicely, but now im starting to worry about the two remaining tires on the car. so now my car needs new struts, mounts, 2 tires and some body work. something tells me i will be behind the wheel of a sienna or odyssey before i planned.

I am curious about the manufacture date of the tires and how long you have had them installed. The date will be stamped on the tire. See this link for details. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=11

Please share this with us. It may help save others from the same situation. Thanks

There was a case of this on a 'news' program down here. It turns out that the tyre was far too old and the rubber dried out, compound changes rar rar and fails, as shown by the OP

the tire was manufactured february 2004. 5 1/2 years old for a tire doesnt seem too bad, does it? my wifey's liberty tires were replaced (after being worn out) and they were 7 years old. the tires on my camaro are over 7 years old.
