Unhappy Won't start after TB change

OK, guys, it's me again... My brothers told me that there's nothing worse than a woman with a ratchet set, and NOW, I'm inclined to believe them... Here's the story... Some of you may be familiar, some not, anyways...

96 Camry 5SFE...

Changed the TB, WP, Crank seal, Cam seal, oil pump o-ring, and the WP housing. All OEM parts. I did the job per DZ63's DIY... I did it once in December, and all went fine, but now, on the same car, same job, it won't start... The first time I did the job, it was because the WP took a dump, and made the TB snap. THIS time, I used OEM stuff (I didn't the first time, which is why I had to do it again)... I thought the WP went out again (I used a Vato-Zone WP the first time), because it started to over heat, and leak coolant on the WP side of the motor...

I thought it may have been the HG, so I did a compression test to confirm that, and got good numbers, so I proceeded with the WP change. Now, mind you, after doing the compression test, the car started and ran fine, because I had to move it into a better spot to do the WP job...

Anyways, I do the job, get the stupid thing buttoned up, try to start it, and crank, but no start. Checked the timing - SPOT ON!! Fuses and relays look good, battery is good, alternator is NEW, I also just put a new distributor cap and rotor on it today, but still no joy. The spark plug wires only have about 2-3000 miles on them.

What the hell else could it be??

Starter? Does it struggle when it cranks?

Check the CEL and see if codes popped up. May tell you the exact issue. And no, the car doesn't actually need to "start" for the CEL to get an error.

The car doesn't srtuggle when it tries to start, so i'm pretty sure it's not the starter... I made sure I plugged EVERYTHING back up, so i'm also pretty sure it's not that...

Can someone tell me how to check the coil before I spend $60 on one??

Also, ASG, I don't have a clue of how to check for CEL codes... Do I count flashes or what? I thought my car was OBDII, but it may not be.

Disable fuel pump by removing fuse.

Take sparkplug(s) out of engine and with it connected to wire, ground the plug on valve cover and have someone crank engine.

nevanerviss, you are a way better mechanic than i am anyways i think all cars past 1996 (inclusive) are ODBII, not 100% positive if it applies to your camry '96. the ODBII socket for code reader is under the steering column kind of behind the knee panel, should be further to left on your year/model. you can buy a code reader in Autozone or AAP cheap or if you bring car to them they will read it for free at Autozone.

You can test the coil with a digital volt/ohmeter and the specs from any manual. If you don't have a manual, you can download a Toyota factory service manual for free at the top of the Camry forum over at AutomotiveForums.com. Also, inspect the coil visually for cracks. They have a tendency to crack with age and mileage and short themselves out to any metal inside the distributor.
