3rd Generation 1996 toyota camry aftermarket

I recently purchased a 1996 Toyota Camry with 90k miles. It needs new tires so I wanted to go ahead and get some aftermarket rims also. I am unsure what I need to know about the car, and rim size, and what requirements the rims I would be buying would have to meet to go on this car. I am also unsure how big the new rims can be before the ride gets rough I have been told that 17s still ride well on a 1996 toyota camry I dont want to sacrifice to much comfort and ride for style. Thanks for any help, advice, or tips on what to get in advance.

Here's another good resource.

http://www.tirerack.com

Plug in the make, year, and model of your car, then go to the wheels section.

They'll show you all the wheels they have that will fit your car in various sizes and they'll show the offsets for them, and what size tires you need for them. They also have a feature where you can see how the wheels would look on your car.

Between that and the thread the Bigbird posted you'll have a whole lotta info.

Most people on the forum seem to go with 17" or 18" wheels. Some go smaller (I'm running a 16" BBS wheel on my '95). A few go larger. It all depends on the look you're going for, how much you want to spend, how you want the car to ride, etc.

Be aware though that if you don't lower the car, installing bigger wheels tends to give the car a bit of a 4X4 appearance. If you don't intend to lower your car and you don't want to get the 4x4 look, then I'd consider 17" or smaller (of course, this too is a matter of personal taste).

Also be aware that if you get aftermarket wheels, you'll likely need hub centric centering rings to fit the wheel properly to your hubs.

I got some 16's from a yard sale, I wouldn't want to go larger, but I live in the state where everyone is a rally driver by necessity.

Mine are a bit wider than stock which has helped the handling a lot, they don't look too bad either.

I'd stay at the +40 offset... depends on how wide the rim and tyre are and how low the car is? It all changes depending on all these factors. You could have say, a +32mm offset on a 7-8 inch wide rim and slightly larger tyres (say, 235s or bigger) and you'll probably no doubt start hitting the guards... if not, you'll definetely be scrubbing when lowered a couple of inches.

If going for say, 18 inch rims, you might want to look at the width of the rim as to the offset first. You can fit a 40-45mm offset on the car fine, but once lowered... it'll start rubbing on the guard.

There's probably no right or wrong answer for what you're after, but if you can tell us:

- Ride height (lowered or not?)
- Size rim you want

People will be able to tell you the right offset, the rolling of guards if needed and the best width rim to use.
