95 camry harmonic balance went bad?

night before last the camry was running rine.went home and the next morning i started the car and heard a light groaning noise and what sounded like a sqeuking from belt.so i looked and the crank pully had about 1/8 inch wobble.car still drives fine but havent went far. im buying a new crank pully tomarrow. my main question is do i need to worry about messing the timing up if i use the starter trick to loosen the bolt. is there any special directions on installing new crank pully? thanks in advance

nope...if you bump start the crank pulley bolt off, it doesn't do anything to the timing since the belt is held on behind the crank pulley- the crank pulley spins the accessory belts

Sounds like the rubber layer disintegrated and the inner pulley just rubs the outer shell.

Impact wrench. Socket and strap wrench. Socket and treadlocker (and hope.)

Go with the first option.

If people try to remove or install the pulley with a chain-strap wrench then the rubber layer will be ripped and the outer pulley will turn loose like what you have now. You also should not try to pull it out using a three-jaw puller. Below is what happens (new pulley purchased).

This is what happens when the wrong puller is used, see the three-jaw puller pictures and the end result (new pulley purchased):

See paragraph #19. You can get a machine shop to make one of these:

DIY: GEN3 Timing Belt + Waterpump + Oil Seal Change - Part 1

Another way appears to be sticking a crowbar between the opening and the socket for leverage. Some would install a bolt into one of the two bolt holes and use it to leverage against. Don't know how well these work.

Remove starter and put pry bar in flywheel teeth to hold crank still while you tighten it.

That's another good idea. Here is a picture of a different application of the starter/flywheel method.
