2000 Camry FACTORY 6 Speaker Radio system, Fronts are dead!

Newbie here. I just bought from my aunt a 2000 Camry XLE with 87,000 KM's. Its in great shape except the front speakers do not work. I believe it is the JBL system with two speakers in each of the front doors. With the fader set to front there is no sound but the backs work fine. I brought it to Future Shop today for an analysis where he told me for $30.00 it was either the amp or the head. Great Help! Any suggestions to determine the root of the problem would be great. The speakers were tested and they are definitely working. I see on Ebay some factory amps cheap if that is the problem.
Thanks,
Ron

Sounds like you have a good diagnosis there. If you know that the fronts are working, you could perhaps change the factory system.

My understanding is that even though the amp uses a different wiring than the standard. Tucked down behind the radio is the standard wiring to bypass the amp.

Another thing you might want to do is get the wiring diagram for the amp from crutchfield and see if you can maybe add some wires to send the rear channels to the front.

Just trying to see if you can rule out the amp by doing this.

Interesting! Will sending the rear channels to the front help me determine if the front channel on the amp is blown? I am not familiar crutchfield, I look them up.

My thought process is that you need to determine whether you have a bad amp or a bad head unit. So if you had some small pieces of wire, and connected the rear channel input to the front channels input on the amp, and you get sound out of the front speakers, you know the amp is good and you need to replace the head unit.

I've posted the direct link a couple times before, but I'll tell you how to get to it. www.crutchfield.com then click on support, then type in 2000 camry, and you will get the wiring information that you need.

If you get small enough wire, such as that found in ethernet cables, you could shove it into the plastic jack and make the connections.

I tried installing a replacement factory amp and the fronts still do not work. HELP! Is it now a given that the head is the root of the problem? What does DIN mean?
Thanks,
Ron

The head unit is probably at fault here if you ruled out the amp. Looks like the front channel blew out. Unfortunately there isn't any way to test this without replacing the unit. :/
A DIN is what they call the slot where the radio fits in. Not sure what kind of radio you got there, but units that are about 3 inches high use a single DIN. Bigger units use Double DIN.

Hi Again,
I have now tried a replacement amp and head unit all returnable to the wreckers. The front speakers still do not work!! Where should I begin to check on the speakers? Odly enough the Future Shop pro had wired in a 9volt to the speaker wires and claimed they were alive. CONFUSED. ANY suggestions would be great.
Thanks,
Ron

You can test a speaker for a signal by hooking up a 9 volt battery to the + and - terminals on the speaker. If the speaker pops then it is good.

You if you can get wires into the factory wire plug for the + and - wires you could hook it up and listen to hear if your speaker pops.

If you have a short in the wire, which is almost sounds like you do then this might be it. The most likely place is around the door.

Go here http://www.camrystuff.com/manuals/Gen4/Body.pdf
Start at Page 11.

That should help. I've pulled my door skins off a lot. The real trick is getting the door handle plastic off. When I first did that I had to use a crowbar to pull that piece off.

Also this URL might help.
