Question Why so squeaky?

Hello,

My 1997 Camry LE V6 has developed some squeaking. When I drive without brakes on, there is no problem. When I drive with the brakes lightly depressed, I hear a high-pitched squeak-squeak-squeak whose frequency of squeaking goes up as the car's speed goes up. When I press the brake harder, I get a loud creaking noise (like an old wooden door in a haunted house) that's also repeating (like a more scary version of the squeak). Thing is, if I'm reversing, and use the brakes, there is no noise!

Took it to a reputable mechanic, who did a brake inspection and said there was no problem (brake pads were still at 9 and 5 mm front and back, respectively). He did mention the "struts were soft" among a few other unrelated issues.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what this would be? I want to take it to another mechanic to get it fixed, but don't want the wool pulled over my eyes. I appreciate your help!

just because the pads are in good shape, it doesn't mean that there is no squeaking

did this mechanic take the brakes apart to look?

squeaking and squealing is often caused by vibrations of the pads and the shims (if the gen4s have them) along with the brake caliper. adding anti-squeal lubricant will often solve this problem
