timing advance

On a 97 5sfe motor can you advance timing by turning the distributor? if so, toward or away from the firewall? I heard it's all done by computer after 95 am I right?

There is no distributor on the 5SFE starting with the 97 model year (generation 4).

Yes I'm sure. The coil pack should be back by the firewall. It's not a coil on plug setup. It's possible that someone put an older 5SFE engine in the car; something from a generation 3 Camry.

You usually rotate the distributor clockwise to advance timing, counterclockwise to retard it.

Why don't you take a picture of the engine and what you think is the distributor and post it here.

dude, go get a timing light from harbor freight tools for like $15 and find out!

that way you can actually check the point otdc you are!

I wouldn't go past 16 - 17 degrees on 87 btw.
