I live in Houston and when I first got my car (4 cyl.) the stock air box was very hot to the touch especially during the summer, burn yourself if you keep your hand on it too long. It's pretty normal for everything under the hood to get really hot.
Also had that kind of "hesitation" you're talking about for acceleration but mostly during low RPMs. I didn't have any stalling problems though.
After I switched to SRI, it got better but there was still a bit of "hesitation." When I got CAI the response got significantly better, but at the cost of some MPGs. It seemed that the air intake temperature affected the throttle response, hotter was slower and cooler was quicker.
