92 Camry 4CYL stopped running smell gas

Hey Guys,

Last year I had to replace to brake lines and although the gas line was dented I took my chances and let it be. Well I started smelling gas and then it died on me about 4 miles from my house. I am guessing the dent has now rusted through and the gas line lost pressure and crapped out.

I have the line and I have about 3/4 of a tank full of gas. If I remember right the fuel pump is on top of the gas tank? Any tips on this operation for a guy that just started turning wrenches again only last year? Before that it was high school days.

Thanks much,

Billy

PS: You can check out my previous thread with pics under total brake failure.

what do you mean "you have the line"? do you have a replacement line? do you have a pre-bent line from a dealer that leads from the fuel filter to near the driver's side rear control arm where there is a union and a separate line goes to the top of the tank?

yes, te fuel pump is actually in the fuel tank. but if the line is broken somewhere along the chassis (like i suspect) you shouldnt have to access the fuel pump.

replacing might sound scary, but its pretty easy to do.

Thanks for the reply ghettosled, YES I have the factory replacement line and I couldn't remember where it attached to the tank. I think I didn't touch it after the old brake line broke on me while removing it. All I thought was uhohh what do I do if that happens to the fuel line.

So where do I start on this great adventure besides jacking the thing up and getting it on good stands?

Thanks again for any help and advice!

if you were able to replace your rear brake lines yourself, replacing the fuel lines is easier. first thing i would do is pop out your back seat, open the access cover to see the top of the fuel tank and disconnect the lines to the fuel pump. if you dont, there will be a siphon effect as you disconnect the lines under the car. then disconnecting the supply and return lines under the hood (i believe there are two lines and do connect under the hood (its been a while)). disconnect the lines by the rear driver's side wheel. then its pretty much out with the old and in with the new. i would also pick up a new fuel filter while you are at it.

+2 on the fuel filter change.

did you inspect the suspected dented gas line? and rule out any other possibilities?
