Do you have a capacitor? That would be cheaper...

Why you don't need a capacitor

It's a good read, long but very informative.

I think the Prado alternator's a direct bolt on too... I think at around 120 amps though. Haven't got a clue what a Highlander is though.

What kinda battery you runnin anyway? I guess you've got bigger and better earth cables as well? Also see if you can ground your amp directly back to the main battery too... would prefer a 4 or 2 gauge cable direct to the Neg compared to grounding to the chassis... quality 2 gauge cable is much better conductor than the metal in the chassis.

It's a Ford 3G alt that was rebuilt for 300amps, it came from a 99 mustang, I bought it used for $50.

This man knows his stuff, a battery upgrade and some beefy grounds do a ton to help with dimming, but so won't a H.O. alt, my worry is that the power curve might not be well suited to your driving and listening habits. I joke about going big or going home, but I plan to upgrade to a 200amp alt from my 300. Sure it does close to the 300amp rating, but that is all after 1500rpm, below that I don't think it could light an LED.

Sexie... I'm guessing you're pumping more than 2000w RMS then ay?

Jtex's system as far as I'm concerned is nowhere needing a bigger alternator.. I know people with larger systems in Gen 4s that don't need larger alternators.

I would think that dimming of the HU would be related to the battery first, before the alternator? Maybe your alternator's just not performing as good as it should? Upgrading would definitely help, but might not be the source of the problem.

You guessed right (3k RMS) but I was running 1500W RMS on the stock alt before, with a over sized wet cell and it did fine until the lights came on, or the blower motor was on high, then it would sink down slowly. Full tilt it would take maybe 5 minutes of abuse with the lights on before the dimming started. My voltage would dip pretty bad and just got worse after that (11.5V before I panic) So the battery was good enough, the alt just couldn't quite keep up. That was pretty close to the line of being able to sustain it's self.
On cold mornings (think 5-10deg F) I could reset the alarm settings with a good bass note.

Anyway, maybe 800W-1000W is below that line but he already has dimming, maybe we could tell alt or batt if he can say if the dimming is immediate, or after a few minutes of playing?
