Confusing A/C question

Hi, I have a 93 camry, 2.2L auto w/ 212K miles on it. Just recently the A/C will stop cooling but after the engine has been off for a while upon start up the A/C will be really cold. It's R12 and I've toped it off w/ Freeze 12 over the years when it's needed. The sight glass is clear. Usually have cold air on a cool engine.

Today the car was parked in 85 degree sun and I drove 2hrs w/ no A/c. I could feel the compressor kicking on when I'd push the button but no cold air. After parking it in the shade for a couple of hours I drove home (the sun was still hot but not as much) w/ ice cold A/C. I checked the sight glass once I got home and it was clear. It's like something electrical is shorting out when the motor is hot but yet I think the compressor is still running.

Please give me some ideas. Could it be internal wiring on the compressor?
Thanks for any help. Jim

Either the compressor is running or not, if it's not then no cold air. Check the compressor belt tension. Compressor clutch could be kicking out. Check pressures.
