clicking noises oh no!!! (brakes,suspension?tranny)

so ive got a number of clicking/popping noises coming from my car and id just like to get some insight as to what the problems might be before I take it to the mech.

gen 4.5
1. brakes
theres a little popping noise (kinda sounds like something hitting a tin pan) whenever i press down or release the brake pedal

2. suspension?
another popping noise when i drive over a speedbump with the front two wheels. i dont know what it is exactly what part its coming from but sounds like somewhere from around the suspension (i think right front side)

3. transmission
the tranny makes a loud clicking noise often when it changes gears. seemingly mostly when it downshifts 4>3. also a bit of numerous miniature clicks when driving off from a complete stop.

any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks

3rd Generation

My brakes do that too, it hasn't seemed to cause any problems though at all. And I haven't found any defects whatsoever.

The second could very well mean your strut is blown and needs replacing. It will sound like a very hard "clunk."

The transmission noise sounds odd to me.

keep in mind the 5sfe is not by any means a quiet or smooth running engine and that a lot of these lesser noises may just be that

hehe, most 5s-fe do most of noises you listed
i would be only worried about tranny/differential noise on downshift. are you sure it comes from tranny itself ? do you have any clunking/clicking noise when shifting gears in a parking lot (forward vs reverse direction) ?

the rest is simple as posted above (brake pads/worn shims and worn struts). replace both front struts and maybe rubber insulators too if they are worn.

there was a TSB on clicking brake pads. in short you should remove front calipers, replace the metal shims as they might be broken (brake pads sit securely in them), clean everything (except rubber parts!) with brake cleaner, let it dry out and then use high temperature grease (e.g. Permatex Ultra Disc Brake Lube pouch from autozone) on all contact surfaces between iron<>aluminum<>pad. be careful not to smear that grease on either rotor or friction surface of brake pads!

the tsb has pics of application points (including back of pads).

This popping turned out to be a nice sized rock wedge up in the undercarriage. The dealer tech found it and showed us.

No more popping
