Gen 3 and 4 Rear Drum to Disc DIY

1: Take off wheel.

2: Spray PB Blaster (Or similar penetrator) onto the brake hose.

3: Remove Drum. If they are rusted on, use a screw in the holes on the drum to pop it off the hub.

4. Unscrew the bolt that holds on the brake hose to the strut. (12mm)

5: Unscrew the E-Brake cables. (All are 10mm)

5A: Bolt in side rail.

5B: Bolt in middle after the bend of the cable.

5C: Unscrew the 3 nuts that hold on the heat shield, in order to access the rest of the cable.

5D: Unscrew the E-brake cables that are under the heat shield.

5E: Take the cable out of the holder. There is a hole on the top part, so that when you turn the cable 90 degree’s, it can be pushed up and taken out.

6: Loosen the brake hose, and retighten. This is just to break it loose to make it much easier in the following steps.

7: Remove the Hub. 4 bolts. (14mm)

8: Pull the backing plate off, and let it sit there.

9: Slid the backing plate back onto the knuckle. Make sure to put the big O-ring back on, to keep crap out of the hub bearings.

10: Screw back on the hub. (59 ft/lbs)

11: Set the E-brake adjustment to minimum.

12: Put on the rotor, and tighten the Caliper Bracket. (34 ft/lbs)

13: Put on the caliper and tighten the bolt. (14 ft/lbs)

14: Screw on the new brake hose onto the caliper. Make sure to use 2 new copper washers as shown. (21 ft/lbs)

15: SLIGHTLY loosen the old brake hose. Then pull out the clip that holds it onto the car. Then unscrew the old brake hose, and screw on the new one.

16: Screw back on the new E-brake cables and heat shield by following step 5 in reverse order.

17: BLEED THE DAMN BRAKES PLEASE!

awesome... thanks for the useful info. since the stock Gen 3/4 Camrys come with drum brakes, what specific rotors do you get in order to convert the drums to discs? does Toyota make rear discs just to replace the rear drums?

Autozone carries a rear rotor for our cars, I'm sure most other car part stores do also.

My mind isn't catching the full view of the hand brake. How does that work?

ES300 calipers, reman. I sold a couple swaps for it actually. Mostly on SolaraGuy since everyone here who said they would buy a kit f'ed me over.

If you have NEVER done it before, BUT know how to work on car's, I say give yourself 5 hours to be safe. More if in a state with rust.

As for cost, all depends what you want to use. New, reman, all used, combo of new/used/reman.

Those calipers/rotors are nice, but HUGE!

I was thinking of just going with v6 rear disc setup to minimize cost, etc. Not too much rust in Cali, but 5 hours isn't too bad at all. Just need to set a good day aside or something when I decide to do it all.

Anyway, good DIY, this will be extremeley helpful when I get to it

Aw so your leaving the shoes on and they press against the inside of the rotor? Is this how its normally done with stock rear discs? Iv only seen up close GM rear discs with the pump engage.

JC, the Camry rear setup is the same steps. There isn't a price difference between the ES300 and Camry setup actually. Also, the I4 and V6 had the same rear disc brakes. The V6 wagon and ES300 had the bigger ones.

#2!, yes, thats exactly it.
