3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 94 1mz-fe and I am stating to have some issues with the coilpacks. I have all individual coilpacks on both banks. I have been wondering if its possible to swap/upgrade to the Gen4 coils that have packs in the front and wires that run to the rear. Any help in this is very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Ok, I am getting a multiple cylinder misfires from cylinder 1 and 3. Now correct me if I am wrong, but arent cylinder 1 and 3 on the firewall side? When I pulled the codes, I had the multiple misfires, but I also had cylinder 1 and 3 misfires. So would I be looking at coilpacks, or ignition module, or what?

^^ Yes, those are the only 2 codes I got. I did just replace the rear valve cover gasket. The plugs have about 6K on them, the I didnt touch the injectors, other than unplug the rear 3, but they are all plugged and clipped back on. The only thing that I can think of is the pass side rear and trans side rear coils, I did swap those 2 around. Maybe they dont like the move! I did also get some dielectric grease to put on too. I am just going to give all that a try and see what happens. Sadly its raining like hell here, so that will have to wait a few days. The worse part is that its only intermittent. Its fine when its cold, then its rough up to op-temp, then when its fully warmed up it fine again. It is sort of strange.

1 & 3 sandwich the front knock sensor. the 94 have an overly sensitive sensor you can move the sensor (tony the tiger did) or try a top end induction cleaning (seafoam, bg, or toyota) and resetting the ecu.

^ and leaving it that way!
also, there isn't a point in changing to the 96+ coilpacks with the wires to the rear bank since they will actually be a downgrade, as they are wasted spark

i agree with chronoti i would clean up and reset.
the back side of the engine is a b*tch to access..
i had similar problem(s) best way i fixed it was to individually un-plug each coil/injector and re-connect it to see if idle changes at all... then move to the next coil/ injector
i swapped out my old coils and only 2 injectors on the rear side of the engine with no problems (knock on wood)
I have seafoamed twice in the last 8k miles, last time being less than 2k ago. I have thought about moving the knock sensor, but thats below the lower intake manifold, correct? I am thinking about swapping the possible bad packs to the front side of the engine in case they are bad, so they are easy to access. Its just so strange how it just randomly comes and then just stops for awhile, then i come to a stop and its acting up again. Its just odd.

I will move the knock sensors at a later date, but for now I think pack swapping will just have to do. Now which are cylinder 4 and 6? Are those the 2 on the front closest to the TB? I thought cylinders 1,2,3 were across the back/firewall side and cylinders 4,5,6 are on the front side/rad side. Is that not true?
