1996 Camry - 1MZ-FE OBD II Code 0305

Just got a OBD II code 0305 - Generic Mis-fire on the 5th cylinder. Does anyone have a recommended order of tests on the problem?

what grade gas are you running, time since last tune up?

do a topend induction cleaning (seafoam, bg, toyota)

reset the ecu

how old are spark plugs? have you pulled one to see if they're burnt up? have you tried swapping the #5 coil onto another cylinder to see if the code moves to the new cylinder?

if i remember right, #5 is the front center cylinder.

Pull the plug. Refer to the NGK pictures and see if that plug is fouled.

Check the plug gap and conditin of the electrodes.

Measure the resistance of the plug wire. Sometimes a break in the conductor will still measure good. So it's kinda iffy.

Check coil resistance. As others suggested, swap locations and see if the code moves (eg P0303 P0301)

Check distributor rotor/cap contacts and general condition.

Do an injector cleaning, include Chevron Techron, Seafoam and other products.

If this still doesn't solve the problem try a compression or leakdown test. But this prolonged problem likely will show up as abnormal spark plug condition (carbon foul, oil foul).

a 1mzfe doesn't have a distributor or rotor - it's coil on plug. and the 1996 version has 6 coil packs, so there are no wires to check (aside from the shorties on the bottom of each coil, and they almost never go bad. otherwise, your suggestions are correct for misfire trouble codes.
