SUPER Deal Oil filter 95 cents Too good to be true?

I know I am super late with this, wasnt sure if it was posted here. but I had been online for looking at prices of the filters and oil specials for an upcoming oil change. I got to the Advance Auto parts site and saw the Store brand was 95 cents, i was thinking HELL NO. WONT TRY IT. welll after successfully completing the oil change a couple weeks ago with the Pepboys Proline special, and saving myself atleast $20 for an oil change. I said i was gonna try to always have the supplies in stock.

So i was looking today again at the prices around the differnet part stores and saw it again. and did the GOOGLE thing, found the bob the oil guy site that mentioned the adance auto parts total grip had been on clearance for atleast a month. Also that although it has the gritty stuff on the outside like the fram, they believe it is made by PUROLATOR.

I will include the link, also a link where somebody supposedly cut one open.

I was able to pick up the last 3 they had at my local AA. just a heads up if anybody was interested. $2.85 plus tax for 3 purolator filters seems like a good deal especially if you are changing every 3000 miles.

PS do the filters go bad, the rubber seal, or anything else? How many are too many to have on hand?

I'm also curious about here. My closest Advanced Auto is 8 miles away, is it worth the drive? Wondering if I should buy some for all of our cars.

That's probably the equivalent of the Purolator entry level filter, like the Premium Plus. But I only use their premium level PureOne, or the equivalent Bosch Filtech and Motorcraft filters.

Better filters do filter better. Smoother engines.

Filter can go bad. Newer Toyotas and Frams use cardboard endcaps that can come unglued in extended intervals. Maybe that's a reason for the 5000 mile limit?

The better ones should have a red silicone anti drain back valve that can stand up to higher temps better. A metal bypass valve instead of plastic. The filter media should be multi density with synthetic materials to catch finer and more dirt.

For European premium cars with extended drain intervals (15,000-20,000 miles) use only OEM filters and high specification engine oils (VW 502/505, BMW LL01/04, MB 209, etc). These are filter inserts instead of metal canisters for enivironmental reasons.

I'd keep a year's worth.

I change my oil every 3,000 miles, so I assume this should be fine.

I'm gonna go pick up a few tomorrow.

BTW, if you mean filters go bad on the shelf. Ummmm, haven't heard of it. But parts usually have a shelf life of max 10 years. Some are shorter, like tires. Not sure about filters.
