3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Well, as the title of the post implies, I'm considering an LED taillight conversion. I did a search here and came up with nothing so I decided to start a thread. I have a gen 3.5 as my signature implies and after making a brief trip to the land of Turbo Diesel Injection i.e. Europe, I'm really interested in seeing if a custom LED taillight conversion is possible for the brake/parking lamp and the turn signal lamp on my car. If it is possible, can anyone point me in the right direction? Sorry if this sounds like a newbie idea, but I'm curious!

no i was refering to the general idea, I want the brake/tail light to be full with LEDs, not just a round plate that only takes up 50% of the space availible, same goes for the turn signal... I know what want it to look like, now I simply need to be pointed in the right direction for info on HOW to do it... Sorry if I wasn't clear about what I had in mind...

You can buy some drop-in LED bulbs. All the benefits of LED, none of the hassles.
Well, there're SOME hassles. You have to bypass the light failure sensor and change the flasher relay to get all the benefits of LED. But you have to do these anyway.
Just another idea.

Nah, that's the easy way out, I want to be creative!! And if I'm replacing relays and doing some electrical work, which I will have to do if I build my own LED board, I might as well get what I want. I also saw the '10 Mustang yesterday with it's sequential turn signal and it hit me that I could attempt to do that for my car as well...

I've done an LED tail light conversion about 3-4 years ago, but eventually I went back to stock because I wanted the rear to look fully stock... I do too much cruising on weekend night with groups of local car buddies, and I hate when cops were able to identify my car because of the LED tails...lol It happened two times, so I decided to go back to stock tails anyhow...
Here's a video of my car back in summer of 2003 showcasing the LED tails:

Well Tony, you car is unique in more ways than custom LED tail lights But yes you do have a point with the whole cop issue. I actually had this conversation with some of my friends last night and that same point was brought up by my friend who has a Wilson 5000 antenna (for a CB radio) on his trunk... So it was deemed that I would only go with LED turn signals. Yours look nice, but I'm not a big fan of the round LEDs however, I was thinking along the lines of designing my own custom board like eyezack87. I do however have a couple of specific questions for you: How did you put them in the housing? Did you take a knife and hack at it from behind, or is the lens removable somehow? When doing the LED turn signals, would I have to change anything in the circuitry of the car? Would I have to change the turn signal relay? I know that I would have to make the resistance of the LEDs the same as that of the stock bulb to avoid hyperblick, but is their anything else I should know? Thanks!

^+1 always been nervious to do it to my red/clears cause i have a custom led set up ive been plannin but no money to start the process. just yet im thinkin a reverse audi a4 led set up like how they have them in the headlights but in the tails as parkin lights. alot harder to explain then to imagin it in my mind lol
You are more than welcome to contact me here or on CL. I'm still working on the project when I have time. Currently waiting on the specs of how much space I have to work with behind my tails from another forum member since I don't have a full day to bake, measure, then rebake my lights. Debating to work on v3.0 of the 3rd brake light too lol.....
I probably wont be much help on side markers since I'm still learning on that too. My fix of the bulb out for the tails/brake lights is to remove it from the cluster since its not necessary once I complete my project
