Towing 5500lbs .. how bad of a idea is this lol

I have a '99 Avalon, same V6 as the Camry. I've got Vogtland springs front and back and 17" rims, stiffer sidewall (Michelin PS2's). The V6's have a built in trans cooler in the radiator from the factory.

How bad of an idea is it to tow a load that weighs more than your car? I understand theres some bad physics going on here lol .. what do you think would be the outcome? I mean it's a Toyota, right? Haha..

Basically I'm looking to tow a 2000lb trailer and 3500lb car with my little avy.

Think this would ever work out? Bring on the flaming

hmmm... let's translate a phrase my highschool chem teacher liked to use: "You can always try (taste) anything once."

I don't think towing is the problem, but I do have an issue with you stopping. -- If I were the car in front of you. But yes, the car was not meant to tow...

I can just see the rotors warping now as you try to slam on the brakes because some idiot in front of you.

Does the trailer have brakes?

And btw, I would never try this. I would borrow/rent a truck.

Edit.... forget the idiot in front of you... today, you would be the idiot, trying to tow that much in a Avalon.

Rental truck/trailer is cheaper than Toyota drive train/car!

Read your owner's manual. It will tell you what the maximum towing capacity of your car is. My guess would be a maximum of 1500-2000 pounds. Don't do this.

I'm also going to throw in a vote to rent a truck. You can get a nice truck (just a standard f-150 or something) and a great auto-transport trailer (if needed) from U-Haul.

You already know the answer, but here is another point to consider.

Tongue weight should be 10-15% of gross trailer weight. That's 500-750 pounds are the very end of the car. Not only will the rear suspension be almost fully compressed, this will remove weight from the front wheels making steering control difficult.

With heavy braking, more of the trailer weight will shift to the tongue. With a trailer that weighs more than the towing vehicle, this will overwhelm the usual weight transfer to the front wheels, potentially even lifting the front wheels off of the ground. That will spin into a jackknife before you understand what is happening.

The max towing capacity for a V6 Camry is around 1100lbs. I am going to tow my 150lbs trailer with my 450lbs motorcycle on it, and that alone will be nearing max capacity.

Please tell me this is all just a JOKE!!!!!!

That would be like me asking a semi-truck driver if he though my 20 HP john deere lawn mower would haul his 53' refridgerator trailer.
