ok shes got 120k and at first cold start up she pours out blue smoke. now i know this "might" be the 13w30 burning off because of worn piston rings and that's my main guess on whats going on but is theyr something like a sensor that needs to be cleaned? i took the throttle body off to find a nice build up of brown GOO and a small pool of oil so im guessing every component in the intake manifold is gobbed up
i have been running it with standard napa 10w30 should i maby go to a thicker grade?
thanks mike

It's not the rings, it's worn valve stem seals(assuming you have a 5SFE). That's one of the most common problems with the 5SFE. Mine is puffing blue smoke every startup now, if I let it sit it for more than an hour. I plan on getting a junkyard head, and have it rebuilt. Then, swap the rebuilt head for my worn out one to keep down time to a minimum.

pcv? im sorry but emission controls have me stumped i kinda think i know what that looks like? i have a can of starting fluid that i cleaned the throttle body with
also about 2 months ago the flex pipe on the exhaust broke and then the cat welds broke from the pipe and the down pipe was floating on the manifold with a tiny bit of gasket so i bought a new flex pipe (the good kind) and 2 reducer couplings i cut the cat out welded in the reducer pipes to the stock pipe (so i shoved the smaller end of the pipe into the cat at both ends and welded it up) so its all good the only thing im wondering is if i put the cat on backwards would it matter? or the fact that there is about a half inch of pipe in there
the car runs excellent as far as i am concerned (for a 94) the check engine light dose not come on either
thanks mike

yea its the world famous 5sfe the only reason i wouldn't expect the head would be its quiet and im sure that 16 years of sludge buildup is keeping everything sealed up (why i wont seafoam my engine)
i would sugest for the head rebuild do the rod bearings also i had catastrophic engine failure twice on my 91 celica due to rod bearing failure (had a rod shoot through the oil pan and a piston crack through the block)

If it's the stem seals then it'll usually smoke after sitting a while. But between short starts you won't see smoke. If it's the rings then it'll smoke while running. Sounds like you need new stem seals.
You can try a high mileage oil?

Do a web search for the camry sludge or gel recall. In a class-action lawsuit, Toyota agreed to cover this repair for 8 years. My '01 had the same problem a couple of years ago and the repair took care of it.
The sludge problem supposedly continued in newer engines. That's why in 2004 Toyota lowered the oil change interval from 7500 miles down to 5000 miles and now retroactively applied to all model years.
But I'm not sure if the 8-year sludge warranty covers the new model years?

well i cant blame toyota for someone not changing the oil every 3000k
when i got it the car had no oil a cracked water pump shot struts and bald tires what i do blame toyota for is the week oil pump and the weird oil filter cooler (present on the rev2 not on rev 1) HOWEVER...
i am a fan of the lucasoil additive i would buy 3 quarts of mobil 10 w 40 synthetic and add a quart of lucasoil i ran my celica 45k with a rod knock and low oil pressure and the lucasoil quieted the rapping noise and boosted oil pressure about 10 psi it did what it say it would "keeps engines alive"
now on a engine with this thick oily flaky goodness i dare not add a thick viscus additive to dam up the oil passage ways right?

Same issue with mine (150k). I went to a high mileage oil (it will soften the seals) and it worked, but it will take a few oil changes...maybe a years worth...
Note: Don't change your grade...keep using 10-30...
As the others have said it is most likely your valve stem seals. They can be replaced with the head still on the car, but I wouldn't do that just yet. First, monitor your oil consumption for a while. You may not be losing as much oil as you think. Monitor it and let us know in a month or two how much oil you are actually using.

That was on the generation 4 Camrys (1997-2001). It does not apply to the generation 3 cars.
