emission thingy ?

ok so im a wittel slow when it comes to emission parts theirs just so many of them however i know what they are suppose to do and that if theyr dirty theyr not working 100%

so my question is when looking at the 5sfe intake manafold from the drivers side theyrs this "flying saucer" looking thing with a blue toyota sticker on top it goes into the manifold with the firewall behind it

i took the throttle body off the other day and the sensor side of this thingy was either rotted out or gummed up i couldn't tell and didn't want to go F ing with it (the car runs fine) but i picked at it and littel crumbs started falling out of it

what is it can i take it out and clean it and is it an expensive replacement

thanks mike

egr something. expensive yes, i dont know what it is but i know it is expensive.

ummmm i havent had an egr in like 9 years so i cant remember but i think the top of it might pop off and you should find a filter inside, if not this part should be to the left. in which case it your egr, try no to clean it with anything too harsh because there is a diafram inside that still needs to move and be intact.

If you haven't tripped a code then the EGR valve is working properly and no need to change it.

Not all that unusual to have a "little" blue smoke at start up especially with higher mileage. Probably means the valve stem seats are showing a little wear. I had a '97 Camry 4 cyl and they were known to have potential stem seal issues. I just got rid of it with 172K miles and for a few years had a "little" puff of blue smoke after sitting all night. Unless you're really using a lot of oil between changes, mine used 1/2 qt every 2500 miles, I wouldn't be too concerned...but I'd keep an eye on it.
