3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi everyone,
My neighbor has a 2000 Camry LE which just hit 200k & the check engine light is on. Does anyone know where I should start looking? How to reset it? We've been ignoring the light for now, but we have to get it inspected next month so we need to get it done. I went to Pep Boys & they said it might be the oxygen sensor; I'm open for any suggestions.
^+1 on that, tell him to go to autozone and get the codes read. Once he has those, look it up and/or post it on this thread. You MAY be able to get the CEL to disapear for awhile by removing the battery, big emphasis on the MAY part of this statement. Good luck!

Okay, so I went to AutoZone, here's a list of all the error codes...
PO301: Cylinder 1 misfire; took care of that, did a tune up & changed the coil spring.
PO440
PO441
PO446: These three have something to vaporizing system.
PO136: Oxygen Sensor
PO171
P1135: These last two I'm sure what they are
I changed the gas cap as well because we thought it might be bad. After the tune up, we took it for a drive & the car drive completely differently, significantly smoother & quicker. While I was driving, the Check Engine light was off for first like 5-10 minutes & then it came back on. I did dis-connect the battery for like an hour or so while I was working on it, maybe that's why the check engine light did not come on right away. I plan on changing the oil, transmission fluid & timing belt tomorrow morning.
P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction
P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction
gas cap seems about right
P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
well these seem like you need to replace the upstream o2 sensor is this the 6 or the 4? 4 would be the 1st from the head 6 would still be the 1st from the head closest to the firewall.
more or less it triped the p0135 and p0171 codes again it takes it a while before it will trip those codes it has to do a complete relearning sequence before it will trip those codes (well most any code that wount keep the engine from running)

you should get the code pulled again after the tuneup to see which ones are still there. you can check this site for help with codes: http://www.obd-codes.com/
If you fix the oxygen sensor you may solve P1135, P0136, P0171, and P0301 together.
As far as the P044x codes go, the carbon canister of that generation is known to disintegrate and spew carbon dust all over the system, plugging up vacuum switching valves.
The VSV on the air filter housing with a hose going into the throttle body is the easiest to check. Might want to start with that one and see if it's plugged by carbon and if it operates with battery voltage. It should also pass a good amount of air (vacuum) when you remove the hose from the canister side. (fuel vapor precautions apply)

Pulling the 5A EFI fuse for 1 minute is easier. It also saves radio stations and clock time.

Okay, so I fixed everything I needed to fix & the cehck eingine light stopped comming on. So, I went to to get it inspected & it failed b/c it's "not ready." I asked a few people & they said that I need to drive it for a few hundred miles, could that be it or can anybody shed some light on this.
There are EPA mandated on-board programs that help monitor your car's emissions components. These program have to "complete" their runs to show that everything is ok.
So try driving local, highway, coast, etc etc. To tell if all "monitors" completed their run, Autozone can read off the status of these monitors on the OBD-II reader.
