I know you have to fill the tranny and diff separately, so the question is are they sufficiently separated to allow the use of say, a Molybdenum additive without it getting into the clutch packs?

Depends if the seal between them is any good.

I changed my wife's 97 Camry 2.2L automatic transmission and differential fluid last week. First the transmission it was nice and red (regularly changed every 20K mi.) but when I open the plug for the differential it was dark brown. So I belive they don't get to mixed together. But V6 engine cars might be different.

I believe they are separate on the 4 cylinders but togetehr on the V6's.

The earlier Aisin 540 series have separate reservoirs IIRC. It's too bad they had to tap a hole in there. I'd think a heavy hypoid gear oil would be better in the diff?
