Exclamation shop liable? Help

So I removed my stock RSB today and attempted to put in the TRD piece. I was able to get the right side on without problems, the left side, not so easy. I had the same problems as this member.

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t226361.html

Long story short, I ended up taking it to a shop with a fellow TN member and they broke one of the screws that attaches the bracket to the chassis and couldn't drill it out. They said I had to buy a brand new bracket. Is the shop liable since they screwed up? No pun intended.

They also said they would only charge me $20 to reinstall everything once I get a bracket. I am currently driving without a rear sway bar

Here's a pic of that piece I need a replacement for with the screw stock inside.

A picture for reference of how it attaches to the rear sway bar.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about except its attached to the frame. Rear passenger side. Note: endlink is not attached, there is no sway bar.

i would say its on your nickel. they didnt do anything negligent, so its chalked up to what it takes to install new parts.

I don't think you can hold them liable. They did what anyone else would do, and unfortunately it broke.

I'd raise hell too, even if it's an old car, they f'd it up. They should have known better than to keep going if it was resisting that much, and to keep going until it broke the bolt off was reckless.
I wouldn't pay for them to fix their mistake, I'd argue that I shouldn't have to pay for the new part.

I installed my Whiteline RSB last week, had the same problem with that side but took my time and was able to finger tighten the bolts before using the wrench. All that without the car raised, very uncomfortable.

By the looks of it, it may be possible to remove the the broken bolt and re-tap the hole to a slightly larger bolt. Might be worth a try.

In general, it would seem fair that the shop provide the labor for free and the customer pay for new replacement parts.

Can't say I know best for this situation.

Bolts break, but that one doesn't look very rusty, maybe it was cross threaded, but either way, it doesn't look so stuck that a good application of heat and an extractor wouldn't take care of the problem.

when i installed new rear brake lines. i tried to remove the sway bar to get it out of the way. i snapped the same bolt as you and the other one as well. and this was after letting it soak in pbblaster for 20 minutes. i dont think there was any way to aviod it on mine. i would expect a shop would have had the same issue. i just opted to drill and tap some new holes on the hold part.

Dude just call me up next time you do it, we'd a gotten it in!

Sucks man, raise as much hell as you can and maybe you can at least get a free install rather than paying for the parts and the labor!
