3rd Generation 1992 camry electrical drain

My 92 Camry battery goes dead with the engine off after about 8-12 hours.

I measured with a ammeter and there is a 5 amp draw on the battery with everything off and keys not in the ignition.

With my ammeter still connected I briefly pulled the fuses one at a time to try and find the mysterious draw and I still had a 5 amp drain.

This car has 264,000 on the odometer and it runs and drives great.

This car has a alarm in it and I think it is causing the draw, I tried to find some fuses under the dash that might have gone to it but could not find any.

I live in an extremely rural area and I have no need for an alarm.

I would like to disconnect the alarm and see if my electrical problem is fixed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is there any threads on this type of problem?

Has anyone had a weird electrical problem like this with their gen 3 camry?

Is there a way to find out if this car has a factory alarm or aftermarket alarm?

Is it ok to ask about disconnecting car alarms?

Sincerely,

Colin Morris

the alarm fuse is prolly under the steering column with it fuse next to it you have to move the steel reinforce plate there to get at it.

dont forget to check the kick panel fuses. i had a radio that kept killing my battery, injunction with the bcm.

If it's an aftermarket alarm system it will probably have it's own inline fuse. Check for that.

how old is the battery?

did you ever have on stereo/lights/etc.. on without the engine running?

if you think the alarm is killing the battery try disconnecting the alarm for one night and see if that was it.

obviously if the car starts in the morning you found the problem if not move to the next thing.

maybe you have a short somewhere causing your battery to drain

the alarm/box would most likely be under the dash (steering column)

Many auto parts stores offer free testing of the alternator and battery while still on the car. Call around to auto parts stores in your area and ask if they offer this free service. If they do, drive it over and let them check it out for you.

If you're not sure it's the battery or not, pop off the battery connectors and let 'er sit for for a day or two. If she's still dead when you hook 'er back up, you've got positive id.

Or take Mike's suggestion

I don't know much about alarms, but did you disconnect the biggie fuses in the engine compartment to try to isolate (driver's side box, near fender)?

60W is a goodly amount of power -- I'd think you'd be able to isolate this just by the heat alone.
