3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just bought a pair of Polk DB691 (6"x9") for my 98 Camry. I was able to uninstall the factory installed speakers but noticed that they have a three hole configuration for mounting where as all the new speakers have a four hole configuration for mounting. Any suggestions as to how I can mount the Polks? Do I have a drill holes or is there any aftermarket bracket available?
If this were a new car on a lease that you would need to return, or some rare classic like a vintage Aston Martin, then I would say to make an adapter from MDF and do not modify the existing holes.
BTW, I am not digging on your car, I own the same car!
Just make sure to center the speaker in the hole and ensure that the cone surround and the mid/tweet tower are not going to hit the sheet metal or the rear deck cover.
I just threw in my 6x9s and used self drilling screws right into the metal. No rattle no nothing, they are perfect.
Or you can can get a very thin piece of wood and trace out the old 3 hole, and drill out a 6x9 hole and put your speaker in there and screw the wood into the 3 hole. Does that make sense?
if you mount the speaker upside down from the trunk you can mark holes then easily drill. this is how i did mine. i also have the same speakers you wont be disappointed. i hope you have an amp running them though they sound amazing

I cut my own adapter plate out of 1/4" birch plywood (from a hobby store). If it had been feasible for me to make new holes in the deck I would have, but there's no room to fit a drill! There's hardly enough room to get just the screws in... It's been a while, but I think the point where you have to drill isn't flat, it's angled.
I assume the same answer for a 1994 6x9 speaker replacement.

Thank you.
I assume that it is the same answer for a 1994.
Also, I plan to reuse the plug adapter and soldier it to the new speakers. That about right.
