98 Camry 2.2l starts - runs runs extremely rough and stalls

I'm working on this car long distance for a friend.

1998 130k miles 4cy.

The OBD code has been on for about 6 months indicating front air fuel sensor (California spec).
A mechanic obtained the code and indicated it was the A/F sensor. I personally obtained the P0170 code and the P1130 a while ago and no action was taken.

This had not been replaced because the car was running fine and they did not want to spend the money.

Now I got a call - it starts, then runs extremely rough and stalls when put into gear. The Triple-A guy told them it sounds like a fuel filter.

I'm making the 30 mile trip to Baltimore and I'm bringing a new Air-Fuel Sensor and a fuel filter.

If I replace these items and it still stalls can anybody suggest the next thing to look at?

Thanks a lot.

Bill

Definitely check the plugs and wires. Plugs could be gunked up from them not taking care of business in the first place.

Yeah, check the parts that may be affected by the sensor.

Then check your EGR valve and pipe for carbon plugging up the things.

Well I dove up to Baltimore and my friend told me that when the triple-A guy first started the car and it was running rough he gave it gas before putting it in gear and it seemed to clear something up. He towed it anyway (free) to her apartment and when I got there today it started and ran fine, no problem whatsoever.

Hmmm - So I replaced the A/F ratio sensor and reset the Check engine light and drove it around and it still ran fine.

I had replaced the plug wires earlier this year so I know those were OK, but I did replace the sparkplugs with NGK GP Platinum. The old plugs that were in there had a LOT of miles on them and were the 'multi-ground' type plugs.

I decided not to replace the fuel filter after reading in the forums that the FF is rarely a problem.

I test drove it on the highway after replacing the plugs and its running fine.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Dual ground elctrode plugs were OEM on this car; either NGK or Denso.
