PCV system

About 6 months ago I ran sea-foam through the engine. Smokes badly every time I start the engine cold since then. Oil is coming through the PCV system hoses into the air intake. What's the downside of capping these off? Or just capping the inlets for the intake and putting a filter or something on the outlets on the valve covers? Smoke is very annoying.

capping off will cause the gas pressure to blow out your seals.

search around on here there are instructions to make a catch can that collects most of the oil. also it sounds like the pcv is stuck open not letting the gas flow in only one direction.

The valve has been replaced several times. Sometimes at idle though it does open and close really fast, makes a buzzing noise. I just assume I have bad valve stem seals. It did this long before the smoking problem though.

sounds like an increase in engine vacuum, and sucking oil into the intake manifold over valve guide seals. this is a problem and while a catch can would mask the problem, finding the cause of the problem and fixing it is the only great solution. you may want to check all pcv hoses, not just the valve. ensure you are using the correct valve. you may also want to replace the grommet when changine the pcv valve. i get mine from the dealer and have had nothing but excellent results.

I've been getting the PCV valves from auto zone. I did replace the grommet as well. But it still seems to be a little loose. Should the hoses have any clamps on them? The hose that goes behind the MAF sensor is new. Oil is sucked in through both hoses.

Also, not sure if this is related. The car hesitates a lot during hard acceleration. Especially with the A/C on.(Has done this for over a year). The last two tanks of gas I have use premium(I think its 93 octane) fuel. The hesitation is almost gone. Could this just be because of the added oil to the fuel or is higher octane fuel supposed to be run in the 1mz?

Thanks for your help guys.

It might have cleaned out all the gunk so well that oil is now leaking past stem seals maybe???

The PCV grommet should fit tight to seal in the vacuum (as well as all other gaskets and seals). Otherwise you might have vacuum leak related driveability problems.

I'd also recommend a compression or leakdown test and check to see if you have excessive blow by past piston rings.

the oil in the intake can definatly cause hesitation but you may also want to check for adequate spark, making sure the plug wires are good and make sure the plugs are good as well as the cap and rotor. a dirty fuel filter would also cause hesitation and since they're not exactly fun to change, replace it while you're working on the car and don't wait until the snow flies to do so. also, probably wouldn't hurt to inspect the air filter as well. the 1MZ-FE requires premium gas. my 92 SE with the 3VZ-FE requires premium.
