Instrument Cluster Lights

Well, as of right now, all I wish to do is remove the green "condoms" off the bulbs. I'm just curious for those who have done this how it looks?

Also, the 4 #194 bulbs in the cluster, those are the ones that back light the cluster. The smaller #74 & other assorted bulbs are just for the dummy lights, right?

I just want a white back light on the gauges. Also if I were to get white LED's, I believe I have to remove the old bulb but retain the socket? A little clarification guys? Thanks!

What are dummy lights?
Four #194 bulbs + one 4mm neo wedge bulb by the fuel and 140 is the back lighting for the gauge cluster. You will want to replace one more 4mm neo wedge in the gear cluster to match. The top one is the back lighting for that cluster. The #194 bulbs pull right out of the black twist socket. The neo wedge bulbs are all one piece.

I swapped my green ones out to red ones to look like a newer Toyota style cluster. I think I used 5 194 bulbs. I have wanted to switch to LEDs though. In due time.

I will try to post a pic later if I remember.

I pulled out my cluster, took off the green condoms.
I love the Lexus white look.

But, I realized that the bulb near the "140" MPH designation by the odometer is still greenish.
I removed the "condoms" off the #194s, maybe its the #74?

I do love the look though, much better than pale dull green.

Maybe white LEDs in time.

oh yeah, I think theyre called dummy lights, the "BRAKE", seatbelt, highbeams, gas, etc. indicators.

What I would really like to do is find a way to put 2 or 3 fluorescent tubes from smaller junk lcd pannels inside the gauge cluster. But thats just dreaming. My wife will kill me if I start dicking around with the lights in my car again.

I feel you.
My girlfriend says I spend too much time on the Camry & less on her, and my mother says I'm wasting my money & "breaking" things.

Well, I pulled it apart, and now I'm kinda unhappy about that lone green bulb by 140.

I guess I'll find time to look & change, or just wait if/when I get LEDs.

Now a question, what bulb am I missing to pull the condom off, the blue socket one?
Also, I heard that If the #194 Sockets are brown, you cant remove the bulb.
I have grey "WAGNER" sockets, any help?

I want to replace all of the bulbs in my dash cluster with standard, basic factory bulbs (not looking to do color, LED or anything). Can anyone help me with the exact list of part/bulb numbers I need to buy? Thanks!

Hmmm. That's gonna be relatively spendy (~$80 at a non-discounted stealership)

5 x 83119-24290
1 x 83119-32010
21 x 83119-02030 (if North American production) or 21 x 90981-11018 (for Japan production)...door plate should tell where made.

These are just for the bulbs, not the sockets.

I've forgotten the details, but my takeaway lesson from messing around with this stuff, is to be sure to have the right bulbs on hand when you make the change, or a second car to go to the parts store. (I had been given the wrong bulbs by a large chain automotive store, and I didn't feel the car could be safely driven with the cluster out.)

after replacing the bulbs with LED bulbs- can you still control the brightness like a regular filament bulb?

lunlexus101,
A little off topic, but did you use the same twisties and just put LED's in them? You use 12V LED's or add your own resistor?

Also off topic: any thoughts on why the 95 Camry "N" light works some days and not others? I think its the only "glitch" the car has. About the time I decide to yank the cluster its ON and working again! :/
