3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys, I dont drive a toyota rather a family member does but I'm the one that works on the household cars.
Alright, so we've got a 1993 Camry 5spd 2.2L base model (my rollerblades have more options) with about 155k miles, this past Sunday the clutch complete gave away after having it replaced about 1.5 year ago, kind of odd but whatever as always they bring me the parts and I toss em on. I pulled the car in the garage and the clutch was slipping real bad (duh) however every gear worked fine.
Jacked the car up and pulled the trans, pulled out the old clutch and it was down to the rivets. Got a replacement kit from Advance and tossed it on, once everything was aligned and torqued down, I mated the engine and trans thinking to myself oh that wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be...WRONG. The damn thing would't go into 1st, 2nd, 5th, or Reverse. Only 3rd and 4th. So I started inspecting my work, decided to pull the trans and manually shift and still wouldn't go into gear, I spun the shaft while trying to get it to go in gear but still did not work.
Figured trans might've been bad and killed the clutch or something, so found a 92-96 5spd 4 cyl at JY and the next day I went to pull the trans which by the way shifted smoothly into EVERY gear. About 1 hour into pulling the trans, I decided to see if it would go into every gear and the EXACT same thing happened where only 3rd and 4th work.
Is there something I'm doing wrong or should know?I really need to get this car back on the road... I'm a Maxima guy and personally don't know too much about the Camry's beside their common issues, any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in Advance

if you can move the shift forks without the cables attached, then the tranny is fine
check your shifter cables and make sure that they are all working properly, are all attached properly, and that the shifter itself is fine as well
I'm manually moving the shift fork without the cables attached, from the 3 positions on the selector, only the middle position allows me to move the bigger lever in and out as in shifting into 3rd and 4th. Same thing with the cables attached.

That I dont know.. I mean, I had the retainer clips holding them in place, is there anything else I could possibly do wrong?

i made the silly mistake on the shifter cable, where i reversed the two shifter cable, and only 3rd and 4th gear works, as soon as i swap the position of the shifter cable, all gears works as designed.

Did it shift by hand when you had the trans pulled from the engine though? This one is doing that whether I have the cables attached or not.

i did play around with the shifting mechanism without the shifter cable attached, when the tranny is seperated from engine, and both shifting handle moves, but it is not the same feel as if you were to shift from inside the car. in another word, i can't tell which gear is engaged without shifter cabled installed.
I'm gonna try putting everything back together [again] either tonight after school or tomorrow morning and pray nothing is damaged. I hope the trans is still good cuz pulling that cradle sure looks like fun. I love my Maxima, if I had to replace the trans I'd be done in a matter or 3-4 hours from start to stop..
Wish me luck people

Can anyone direct me where I can find an OEM FSM for a 93 camry? I'd like to have a PDF format copy so I can have my laptop with me while I work on the car. Thanks in advance

Swapped out both shifter cables and all of a sudden it shifts fine! Wonder why it didnt shift by hand at the fork...
