Here is a quick experiment you can do: boil some water in a container where you can direct the steam. Stick a PET drink bottle in front of the steam outlet.

Does it keep it's shape or shrink into a weak blob of melted plastic?

Now think about much hotter than boiling water any overflowing coolant will be.

What will be the likely outcome?

UPDATE:The bottle is still on the car and i still don't have any problems with it. but my radiator just blew at the seal and i'm going to have to replace it.
