if you want to pick up some mpg/power. install a highflow cat. that will make far more differance then removing the 2 pieces that restrict flow the least on these cars.
not only will removing them cause a drop in torque, but it more than likely wont hold back pressure and die quite a bit. and itll be loud as hell, which to me is extremely annoying and just ruins a car for me.

Why would it DIE,especially QUITE a bit? I got rid of the resonator and muffler and added a magnaflow and you CAN'T even tell i did all that. And it still has the same torque at the bottom! LOUD AS HELL? Some people just love to assume things.

took ya over 2 months to respond.
in most cases, and ive herd it, removing the resonator on the 5s will increase the sound level quite a bit. but 1. magnaflows are failry quiet mufflers and 2. you still have your cat which quiets down the exhaust a lot. sound level is often more of a personal perception thing anyways. it may not seem loud or quiet to you but may be to another.
the 5s stock catback isnt terribly restrictive anyways, so swapping out the resonator and muffler prolly wouldnt have a big effect on power...good or bad, top or bottom.
how has it done for your gas mileage? improvments? or have you been driving it harder to hear the sweet sound?

Holy thread revival.
I thought we were talking about flat out removing the resonator and muffler and not replacing it with anything. Guess I missed that part. Simple mistake. And assuming? That's why I've dealt with 4cyl engines not having enough backpressure to run because they had no resonator or muffler, just a plain pipe. One of those being a 3sfe.
Some people just love to start shit over the internet.
i recently went from an axle back setup to a cat back setup, which included removing the stock resonator. i have a 4" muffler, but never really noticed a drop in torque..but then again its probably because i could careless as long as the car gets me from A to B. and it does make it louder, but to me i like it
lol i cut my exhaust off at the after the cat haha... oh man, loud! not as loud as could be only because i think it was all under the car. increase in top end hp... any lb-ft lost was replace by a quicker reving motor. and no attention by cops??? lol. then i got a cat-back with a muffler... :-( got quite... not as quick reving anymore... but gobs of torque! and attnetion by cops :-( i asked one that let me go because my job, he said it was shiney and thats what they look for... so i painted it black the other day ha ha but i still have 3 3waycats on it...:[ now planning on taking out 2 off my headers, custom y-pipe. i'll replace them when i need to re-smoged in a year ha ha

I did my exhaust back in 08, I had a shitty muffler that replaced the stock : Did nothing, Then I had the whole downpipe back redone and took out the resonator, and added a better muffler, little louder : Did nothing, then I said fuck it im just going to pull the cat and see what it does : Low End Torque = Gone, High End Torque = Awesome..... When I did my initial setup I couldnt not only hear the exhaust but I wasnt getting the throttle response I wanted from 60mph to 100mph......Once I pulled everything and did the strait pipe, I got the sound I wanted at higher rpms and also the pull from 60 to 100 is crazy for the 5s. She kicks in hard and opens right up......But off the line......yeah lets just say its not a drag racer......more of a rolling start racer......plus I plan on going turbo anyways....... Said this to say......If you want to keep your low end torque, keep the cat and maybe even a high flow resonator......a strait through muffler should give it a nice sound when combined with these......

Watch out for the build thread!!!
IM BAAAAAACK!!!!!!!
I have the 3vz-fe and I just took the cat off the other day. I cut the flanges off of the cat and welded it to a pipe then bolted it back on and it's definitely louder.
Definitely not annoyingly loud. Mainly if I'm wide open throttle. Personally it feels as if I've lost a tiny bit of torque and gained a little mid to high end power. It just seems like it wants to pull a little harder for a little longer than it used to when it's wide open throttle on the freeway.
If nothing else, then at least it sounds more aggressive lol.
I did my exhaust recently too. Except I did it all at once: header, all new 4' pipe, no cat or resonator, and a magnaflow muffler. The sound isn't really as loud as I thought it would be, in fact I never have had problems with police at all. As for the power output, I agree that low torque went out the window but it flies down the interstate.
