If you are or have friends who are mechanically inclined and have 30 minutes to spend, then spend ~$14 for a gasket set (including spark plug tube seals), and $1 at your local 99-cent store for sensor-safe RTV (for semicircular plug joints). Then you'll find out.
The I4 VCG is leak prone after 50K miles, especially from the back side of the engine where you can't normally see. You can also leak from cam/crank/oil pump seals.
VCG shoulnd't take more than 10 minutes. 30 is because you retorque the plug nuts after 30 minutes as rubber takes a set. See if you can borrow a 30mm socket using Autozone's free loaner tool program.

Don't want to spend the $$ if that's not the problem.
