92 Camry XLE electrical problem

The clock, radio and ceiling light are dead. When you try to lock the doors with the power locks (with the key in ignition, engine on or off), they lock then immediately unlock (power locks work fine if key is not in ignition).

Are they all on the same fuse? Replacing a fuse fixed it for a few days. Could water leak somewhere be blowing this fuse? The sunroof is working but I think it went out also the last time this happened.

The ABS and Airbag warning lights are also on all the time regardless of the other items working or not.

The mechanic says there's also a short in the radio system or speaker.

Separate problems or one big electrical problem?

Water does get into the trunk lid and attached lighting assembly but no problems with any lights. Car is great otherwise (no other electrical or mechanical problems).

Finally found the source of the electrical problems - the wiring to the driver's side visor vanity lamp was shorting when moved. Solution is to disconnect it and forego the vanity lamp (no cost) or replace the visor (not cheap). All electrical works fine now.

The ABS and Airbag warning lights required replacing two wheel sensors (expensive) but the ABS and Airbag evidently don't work without them.

I'm still amazed what a great car this is! Should be good to go for another 50,000 miles (190,000 currently). Test drove newer models with handling and ride not as nice.

3rd Generation

My first post!

Sorry to bring back an old post from the dead, but I had the exact same problem on my 1996 Camry XLE. Everytime I moved my passenger side sunvisor (with lighted vanity mirror) it would burn out the 20A "dome" fuse located under the hood. At first, I thought that the vanity mirror light had an electrical short but after a few days of experimenting and a dozen blown fuses, I finally found the root cause of the problem.

If you unattach the sun visor from the roof (simply unclip the plastic cover with a flathead screwdriver, then unscrew the two phillips head screws) and slowiy pull it down, you'll see the electrical connector harness for the visor, as well as a metal spring/hinge mechanism. In my car, due to the position of the two phillips head screw holes, when I moved the sun visor, the metal spring/hinge would make contact with the metal roof of the car. This metal-metal contact would cause a short circuit and blow the 20A fuse.

To fix this, I simply wrapped the exposed hinge with electrical tape. To be safe, I also wrapped the hinge with foam and zip-tied it so that there would be no more metal-metal contact between the hinge and the roof. Voila! No more blown dome fuses!
