3rd Generation MAP Sensor, Code 31 (OBDI) 93 5SFE

Hi All,

I have a bit of a mystery on my hands. The other day, I was driving up a steep hill in San Francisco when all of the sudden my throttle cut out and I lost power. My CEL came on and I barely limped my car back to Sonoma County. I pulled a Code 31, the MAP sensor, so I went to picknpull to get another one but the code will not clear. I've tried pulling the EFI fuse and the negative battery cable, but the code still wont clear.

I read through previous posts and the symptoms seem to match a bad MAP.

--Bogs on sudden acceleration

--Burning a great deal of fuel, smelly exhaust.

--Knocking after attempting to punch the gas.

--No Power from the engine after 3000 rpm, engine just winds up.

--Starts when cold, then quickly dies

--Rough idle, almost like a miss

I've tried spraying the vacuum lines with brake cleaner, no change in idle. I thought it might be a fuel delivery problem, so I changed the fuel filter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Marc

Try it with carb cleaner. Brake cleaner is non-flamable, so it will not work for this test. It has to be something that can be sucked in to the engine and then burned by it.

Also, there are Toyota factory service manuals stickied at the top of the Camry forum over at AutomotiveForums.com. Go there and download the generation 3 manual. The emission control section will give you test procedures for a code 31.
