To change the filter you'll have to drain and remove the transmission pan. If you do that I would check the solenoids too. Mine was an A140E. Once the pan is dropped the solenoids are obvious. They are on the driver's side one toward the front and one toward the back. One has a white wire and the other is black. According to w**.rockauto.c** the #2 is the black wire (part# TCS15) so the #1 is the white wire (part# TCS14). After removing mounting bolts just grasp and wiggle out. There's an O-ring sealing it in place. Only physical difference I could see was the bracket welded to the solenoid. I clamped the body to the neg terminal of a spare batt and then jumper-ed the connector and touched jumper to positive. Press an air nozzle set to <65PSI to center and then touching jumper causes air to blow thru passages. With no power the air should not pass. Hopefully this will make perfect sense when you've got one out. I was confused until I did it. Good luck. BTW, note where magnets are located on inside bottom of pan. Try not to relocate them.

Dexron III. 10 liters will be plenty. Here's a DIY for a complete fluid replacement and filter change.

A Fram ATF kit #FT1169A has the strainer and gasket. About $20 USD at your favorite local parts store. Your local WalMart should have SuperTech Dexron II/III compatible fluid. About $10/gal.

Or if you have a Transtar Industries nearby you can get the transmission parts there too. Get the cork-rubber gasket, not fiber.

When you place the magnets make sure you don't block the strainer pickup port.

Harbor Freight has these on sale often for about $20. Very useful for tranny work:

ha! just broke on of those tq wrenches. while your there get a set a hex head bits to pull the plug or your going to need a few allen wrenches. 10qt should be too much but you can always return extra, i think just a normal drain and fill should only be like 4 qt. but when you go under there it's very straight forward.

ummm what car are you working on? i know the 6 have a separate fill and drain for the differential (2 qt) not sure on the i4.

On the '96 2.2L, the differential is also separate from the transmission. The differential has its own drain and fill port. You need 2 liters (quarts) to drain and fill the differential. Maim Menu wrote good DIY for this. Click on this link.

DIY : Differental Fluid Change

For the transmission, 4 liters (quarts) is needed if you only drop the transmission pan and do not repalce the fluid in the transmission cooler and torque converter. 10 liters (quarts) if you replace the fluid in the transmission cooler and torque converter (recommended).

The later 6-cyl A540 series has a common fill (through the dipstick tube) but separate drains. Earlier 540 are like the 4-cyl -- separate differential fill/drain plugs. The A540 is not as bullet proof as the lower torque A140, but both are better than the newer Aisin U-series.

One good thing about HF torque wrenches is that they actually have a lifetime warranty. The Danaher-made Craftsman have really flimsy plastic lock ring that tends to break or the handle spins loose. After 1-year no warranty. But Danaher does make better ones for Lowe's and their own brand GearWrench with metal lock rings.

Black Friday sale may be coming this year (?) if anyone wants Craftsman ones at about ~$40. We'll see.
