2001 Camry Power steering problem

Hello,

I have a 2001 Toyota Camry with about 120k miles on it. The problem is sometimes when I go to turn sometimes the wheel will just get jammed and it is very hard to turn (feels like it is fighting to turn the other way) but if I start to turn the wheel in the opposite direction then turn the wheel back it is as if nothing is wrong and I am able to turn without any problems. It has happened twice now the last 3 weeks. Has anyone every heard of this problem? Have any idea what is going wrong? I appreciate any comments.

Does it happen more in one direction than the other? Have you noticed any drop in fluid level? You might start by changing the steering fluid and see if the situation improves.

Have you checked the power steering belt tension?

I appreciate your responses

To answer your questions.

1. (chronoti) It was only raining once when I experienced the problem. My fluid levels are perfect. The belt is about 2 years old but is tight and appears to be in good condition.

2. (csaxon) It does not seem to favor either direction. I have had it happen once in each direction. It appeared to be identical in the amount the wheel would turn in both directions before the problem occured. I have not noticed any drop in fluid levels.

3. (Mike Gerber) I have checked the belt tension. It is snug. Belt in good condition.
