3rd Generation Cleaning Camry Engine

Hello all. I'm new to these forums. I drive a 2.2L 4Cylinder Automatic 1994 Camry. My question is how to clean under your hood properly. I just want to clean the surface and all the dirt and dust from my engine. What product and method should i use in order to ensure safety to my engine. I know very little about automobiles so assume i know nothing. Thanks!

That dirt/gunk/grime isn't hurting anything. Gunk engine brite is supposed to be good and safe, but I have never used it.

go any Autozone, get yourself degreeaser cleaner in red color. find an empty glass bottle cleaner, and pull some in that container. use the glass bottle cleaner to spray on your engine and better control..

have your engine run while you're doing this.

spray degreeaser cleaner on any non electronics...and wait 1 mins (read the instruction on the degreeaser container).. then next you use your hose pressure to clean over....and I normally spray and don't hold too long on the electronic hardware. I just go over 1 time over the electronics hardware quickly as I can. also, do not try to allow water get inside your spark tube.(hold)..if you do, take the spark plugs out and dry before you try to crank the car... if you play safe, and conserve with not too much pressure water RUN..and not too much water around the spark plug tubs and electronics hardware (sensor or alternator, etc).. you'll be safe...

important to keep the car run while you're doing this..and once you're done, keep the car run until the engine dry out.... then you stop the car and restart to see if still good.

i cleaned my engine 2 times a year...I didn't have a problem to re-start after cleaning the engine....and your engine look like new...

go car washer, use they run..DON'T PULL THE TRIGGER ON THE WASHER PRESSURE TO HIGH...WHEN SPRAY ON YOUR ENGINE... THE HIGH WATER PRESSURE MAY DAMAGED COMPONENTS... YOU CONTROL THE TRIGGER PRESSURE, SO YOU DETERMINE WHAT IS TOO HIGH WATER PRESSURE.

Hm, I'm sure everyone else who has posted here is correct.

However, I've always taken my car to the serf-serve washes and sprayed degreaser/water right onto everything under the hood, without covering anything up. I've never had a problem. I try not spray directly onto the alternator of course, but I'm sure plenty of fluid gets on there. I don't keep the car running while I do this either...

I also keep the pressure of the sprayer low.

I wouldn't recommend it if people have actually experienced problems after doing something like this. But it's always been fine for me.
