3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm going to be AutoXing my 96 5S sometime next month. I'd like to squeeze out a few more 1/10s on the track...I know the easiest way to do this is simply by improving driver skill. I'd still like to have my car preforming to it's best ability. Anything I should look into? Advance the timing maybe? I've already overhauled the suspension (TRD RSB, tokicos, H&Rs) and have a CAI and apexi muffler...if that counts at all.

Hmm only free ones I can think of is to check your tire pressure, take out anything in the car that you don't need, and run on a low tank if possible. And driver skill like you said is important too.
If you can get softer and wider tires, that should help a lot. Maybe a strut bar too if you don't have one already.

REMOVE THE FRONT BUMPER, GRILLE, HEADLIGHTS AND REAR BUMPER!!!(if that is legal )
if anything take out everything from the trunk the back seat and the front pass seat if possible.
also get a shorter alternator belt and bypass the a/c pulley. tighten the throttle cable but not too much just take out the slack. if you advance your timing just a little bit ~2-3deg.

good luck man
I highly doubt that's legal. I'll ask at the preliminary meeting tomorrow. Is a shorter serpentine belt really worth it? and which way to advance the timing? rotate the distrib cap clockwise? how do I do it....never advnced the timing before...i don't wanna royally eff something up.

take out your seats. the rear is easy a cake but i havent done the passenger seat. gut your trunk. front strut brace. bypassing the ac pulley may be a good idea if you know how to do it. im also interested in advanced timing..how do you do it?
Definitely not temp, but if you're AutoX'ing, a set of rims with low profile tyres. This increases sidewall rigidity(as there pretty much is none lol) and reduces tyre flex, which can make bodyroll worse.

dont forget flame decals. +10 hp
well you should have a timing gun and advance it using that, if you too poor for free tool rentals or harbor freight i belive it towards the firewall is advance, just puh it till you feel a roughness in idel then turn it back a scooch. if it starts running better then your doing it wrong.
