4 wheel disc emergency brake shoes

Anybody find better sourcing and sizing on these shoes than I have? It is hard to get them aftermarket and they cost more than full size brake shoes.

On top of that I have a 1995 4 wheel disc ABS Wagon with 4 cyl. and automatic. The aftermarket books say I should have the larger rotors in the rear (about 11.3 inch rotors) but apparently I have the 'sedan' style (about 10.58 inches or thereabouts).

And, apparently, toyota didn't keep the mini-drum for the emergency brakes the same size between those rotors so there are actually two different sets of emergency brake shoes (we're going on planned obselesence here). In theory the ones I need correspond to 170mm diameter drum and are 39mm shoe width. Don't have the measurements for the larger variety.

has anyone ever found a parts house that can make better sense of this. Toyota just asks for my VIN number and can't discuss the actual sizes or whether the parts I have are more customary to the sedan (at least the toyota dealers I've tried, maybe there are some with better empirical knowledge). Aftermarket guys can get these shoes but long lead time, modest savings and you still have trouble knowing you are going to get the right size.

In the past I've gotten a package of 4 shoes from the toyota dealer although now I have a dealer insisting that they come individually and that the car takes 3 of one style and 1 of another. Go figure.

At this point I'm just grabbing some from a dealer stock so I can take them back and I'll see if they fit, but this is an enormous pain in the you know what.

Thanks for any help that can limit my consternation in the future.

Have not found a better place to get them.

I have been through this as well, but at $39 CDN per piece, it is ridiculous.

Hajoca,

Drives me crazy. I did actually got a duralast set of shoes for $29, put it on and it was too big by maybe a tenth or so. the shoes look virtually identical but when we went to put the rotors on with the adjusters all the way in and the top of the Em. brake shoes all the way retracted sitting right against the top center pin, could not get the rotor on, not even with 3 lbs sledge.

Put on the dealer parts at $18.75 per piece x 4 and the rotors went on fine.

(not new rotors but we had ground away any rusty build up at the edge, and these same rotors went fine over the dealer shoes.)

Pretty crazy. And some of the spring and clip hardware got damaged because that rust buildup made it hard to pull the rotor off over the shoes. I used a puller and it wrecked the hardward on one side. And nobody had a listing or stock for the hardware. And you can't buy it by the piece or from an assortment, at least not at any stores I found. Would love to know if someplace has got a good old fashioned assortment of springs and holddowns and the like where you just pick out what you need.

When I went to get the hardward the dealer told me it was only available aftermarket and the aftermarket guys mostly don't even list a hardware kit for the parking break for my year. I ended up buying the kit for a 97 which gave me marginally what I need but it was 2 bucks worth of parts for 28 bucks.
