3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My check engine light never comes on(apparently). Seeing no problem I took it to DMV for inspection and they failed me emission due to some ODB Codes. I had it repaied for $450 and took it back to DMV and all the codes are cleared but the Check Engine Light itself is not on. Usually when we start the engine it comes on and goes off if there are not any problems.
I am trying to see if I could fix this myself ( save some $$$). I think the check engine light is on the bottom of the odometer along with ABS light .. the ABS light comes on.
Could this be due to the ECU-B fuse blow? or the light bulb itself ?
No my car did not pass. It is a bit funny, first time they didnt check it, second time they did. The guy said the Check Engine Light is disconnected. There is a FAIL under Check Engine Bulb.
No dedicated fuse.
Just pull the dash board, then the instrument cluster. Disconnect it, look at the circuit board on the rear of the cluster for any loose/broken connections, and also pull the CEL bulb to inspect.

You may want to visit Autozone to read out remaining codes for free.
I don't know what year, but the OBD-II scanner can also tell you if the light should be on.

Theres no fuse? Thought I saw the box diagram that had a check engine symbol in it. Hmmm maybe it was a corolla or something.
Yeah, take out the instrument cluster and check out the bulb for the check engine light. They hardly go out, but got to check everything, and check for any frayed or damages wires that are connected to the cluster. Also, good luck removing the cover dash thinge that is covering the instrument cluster. Oh, camry makes it difficult but corollas make it so simple.

*If* the problem is a burnt out bulb, that's a simple fix. As mentioned by another poster above, all you'd have to do is remove the frame around the instrument cluster, then remove the cluster itself. Then you can just twist out whichever bulb (from the back) needs replacing. A pair of bulbs is a couple bucks at any auto store.
If it's the wires themselves, then you may need to inspect those.
