5sfe Oil Pump Removal Questions

Hello,
Has anyone completely removed the oil pump from a 5SFE more specifically a 1995 Camry. I am referring to the part of the pump that mates up to the block and on the bottom of it the oil pan mates up. I am wondering if it is necessary to loosen the exhaust AND hoist the engine slightly like the Toyota manual says or is there a way around this? Without looking I assume there are clearance issues with the pan removal because the gasket will have to be replaced once the bolts are removed.

Also if it is necessary to loosen the exhaust, what is the part number of the gasket that I will be needing afterwards along with the part numbers of the threaded studs that hold the two pieces together as I have a feeling these will have to be cut off or will break off when I attempt to loosen them.

Thanks for any input!

just curious - why do you have to completely remove the oil pump?

i know to get the oil pan off, its helpful to remove some of the exhaust because it partially blocks the oil pan.

i was able to remove the pan without disconnecting the exhaust, but it was a pain to reinstall the pan. if i were to do this again, i would disconnect the exhaust where it meets up with the primary cat converter. those bolts should be in decent shape, enough to take apart and reintall when your done. with that section disconnected, you should have enough room to let the eshaust hang down.

you do have to remove the timing belt as well, but i never see a need to hoist up the engine like in some instructions. you will have the dog bone mount disconnected, but the engine is still held firmly in place.

I am contemplating replacing the whole oil pump when I do my timing belt/seal job. I realize it is not usually necessary but I figure it would eliminate having to replace oil pump rotors if they are worn, o-ring gasket and the cam shaft seal because these are included with the pre assembled oem oil pump. A total replacment would also replace two more gaskets that have the potential to leak in the future (the gasket between the pump and the block) and the pan gasket in addition to a little more piece of mind.

Why? Are you having oil pressure problems? Second removing exhaust to remove oil pan. How many miles?

while i always applaud being proactive when it comes to car maintenance, but i really dont see the benefit on replacing the whole pump. i think toyota oil pumps are pretty stout and i would be afraid of any potential problems you may face in replacing the pump. the seals that are prone to leaking are pretty easy to replace, so if it was me, i would just replace those seals.
