Few Questions about changing valve gasket

Hi guys it has been a year since I joined this forum and today I decided that it is time to change the front valve cover gasket. I would like to do the back one as well but this is where questions arise.

1.What is the goo thing that you put on the sides of the valve , what is the name of it and where can I get it?
2. What kind of torque wrench do I need ? What size and how much power? If anybody could get me a link with I wrench I should buy it would be great.
3. How many valve bolts do I need for front and back?

4. If I try to change back cover are there any other gaskets and seals I would need to replace, other that valve gasket and spark plug seals?

Thank you for reading.

hello muminiasty,

I am doing some digging on the subject as well. here is what i found so far. i think a 3/8'' drive torque (5-80 ft-lbs) should do. you won't need any insane force to do that.

30mm socket for removing tube nuts (17 ft-lbs when re-torquing if am not wrong), some small 10mm bolts here and there. I assume you are on V6, so there will be some messing around involved with getting room to work at back of engine.

As per seals, i think you should replace all on the way that you touch(valve cover gasket, upper tube seals and some high heat thread sealant if planning on removing the tubes).

1. Oxygen sensor safe RTV. You can check your local 99-cent store for a high temp red one. Or your local Harbor Freight. You're going to need several dabs, so no sense getting the $8 Permatex Ultra Grey, most of it will dry up. Of course unless you want to.

2. For what you need to do, a 3/8"-drive would do. On sale frequently for about $15.

3. Miscellaneous sockets. Of course look for them on sale:

You're going to have to remove the upper intake plenum. Make sure no dirt drops into the plenum.
