4th Generation It's a power steering pump, it's a rack & pinion, it sure ain't superman

Hey all. Been getting lots of good info from the site but after searching through lots of threads I'm still a little stumped.

Have a 98 LE with 154k on it. About a week ago it I lost all power steering and it squeals when I make turns. It's also very "jumpy" at low speeds..i.e. it's almost like the steering wheel is bucking a little when I'm making hard turns at low speeds.

First thing I did was check the fluid and it was just BARELY below the cold line when cold. So I added some ATF DIII to it and hoped it would go away. Nada.

So one guy told me it might be a power steering pump, and when I took it to CarX they said I had a leak in the rack and pinion and I needed a new rack. They said because it was jumping when they steered it into the bay they knew it was a rack & pinion. Not sure if that makes sense.

So any advice on how to hone in on what this is? I'm kinda wondering if it's just the belt tension on the pump, but not sure that would explain the jumping.

Let me know what ya'll think.

thanks!

The obvious first thing would be to check the belt. That would explain the squealing. As for anything else that could be causing it, hopefully somebody else knows more!

Seems like you got 2 problems. A loose belt and a leaky rack. Belt is easy and cheap. Rack is hard and expensive. Its your call on replacing the rack but the belt can be done for pretty cheap and that should stop the bucking/jumping in the steering wheel.

A " leaking rack" is a common diagnosis when the PS gives trouble....and it may not be entirely accurate. It could be the pump.....the supply and/ or the return line to and from the rack.....the supply and/ or return line to and from the reservoir....or even the fittings at the rack (where the lines attach). It could even be the variable-assist valve, built in to the pump itself. A leaking rack - that is, the end seals of the rack are leaking....is not that common. It does happen, but I suspect that this becomes the "official" diagnosis more often that necessary.....because most mechanics don't want to spend alot of time diagnosing problems (diagnosis is not profitable).....and because a new rack and installation IS quite profitable. There is no way that your actual problem can be diagnosed over the internet. So, I would say that, if you suspect the word of the mechanic on this (and there often is good reason to do so)....get a second opinion before spending money on it....or spend some time visually checking all of the components yourself, with the engine running.....to see if you can spot the leak. Then, you'll have better information to go on.

Or, you could do what some of us have done - get rid of the stupid PS system altogether. I did this a couple of month's ago....and I'm much happier for it. As long as you don't have larger, wider tyres on your car...the steering effort w/o PS is not that bad at all.

Just wondering, how do you remove the power steering belt? I just want to see what it's like without power steering to see if I like it and possibly remove the pump.

The belt is the smaller one off the crank. You need to take the alt. belt off to remove it.

Driving around a car without power steering sucks. Its almost impossible to park without killing yourself.
