The most common cause of this is a dirty throttle body/idle air control valve. Clean your throttle body using spray throttle body cleaner or O2 safe carb cleaner. Pay particular attention to spraying the cleaner liberally down in to the square or diamond shaped port in the base of the throttle body. That port leads to the idle air control valve, where your problem may exist. Here's a good how to do it post with some great pictures. It's done on the 4 cylinder 2.2 liter 5SFE engine. You don't specify which engine you have, but if it's the V6 it's similar.

How to: Cleaning Throttle Body -4 Cylinder Engines- With Pictures

In future posts it's best to specify which engine your car has and how many miles are currently on it, along with any recent work done to the car.

It is always a good idea to provide more information for the vehicle in trouble: how many cylinders, how many miles, maintenance history.

Whend was the last time spark plugs and distributor cap replaced?

His 97 Camry was the first year of the generation 4 Camrys. Neither the V6 or I4 had a distributor.

Hi Mike G and Sam,

Thanks for your reply. The link with pictures is very helpful and informative. Today went to NAPA Auto Parts and bought a can of SeaFoam Deep Creep cleaner and cleaned as instructed. At first it kinds of having a rough start but after a few attempt, it run smoother. There wasn't much smog coming off the tail pile though.

My clarification here whether I should also spay the SeaFoam into the Hole of I.A.C or just clean around the butterfly valve without spay deeper into the throttle body ?

History:
Camry LE 2.2L V4 Sedan 5SFE, bought used at 94k kilometers.
94k - new timing belt
Aug 2008 - new EGR vacuum modulater
- new EGR Vacuum Valve VSV
- new Downstream Heated Oxygen Sensor - Rear of Catalyst converter

Oct 30, 09 at 134k kilometers - cleaned throttle body/idle air control valve (I.A.C)
I think the problem is solved.

Yes, definitely spray the cleaner liberally down in to the port leading to the throttle body. I would even let the cleaner soak down in there for 10 or 15 minutes. The car may be hard to start after this but it will eventually will start. Take the car for a ride for 15 minutes to clear all of the seafoam (or other spray cleaner) out. The car may die on you a few times during this drive, but this will eventually stop.

Now install an oil catch system to keep that oil/dirt from building up and causing you all sorts of problems.

It's easier to reduce the oil from going in there in the first place...

Hi,

Thought the problem is solved but it's not after using Seafoam Deep Creep cleaner to clean the throttle body and IAC valve. Up to now I have clean the throttle body and IAC three times and will see.

Any advice if the rough idle or stalling comes back ? Thanks for reply.

You may have to remove the idle air control valve for a more thorough cleaning or you could try this first. Spray lot's of the cleaner down in to that port leading to the idle air control valve. Let it soak in for about an hour. Then reattach the big tube and start the car. If it doesn't help you will have to remove the valve for a more thorough cleaning.

Hi Mike,

Nice to have your respond again. After sprayed quite an amount of seafoam into IAC hole, it was very hard to start up and stalled many times before it started up that took about 8 minutes with the help of applied a gentle on gear padal. Will see how it'll start up in this afternoon.

Is there a tutorial of how to remove the IAC valve for cleaning ? I still having a hard time to identify which is the IAC valve and where it locates.
