axle nut size

I want to pull a cv/joint and the half axle. what is the procedure and tool sizes i will need for the front axles? it looks like a weird, star pattern. is there a 35 or 36mm buried in there as well?

Pull out the cotter pin and then the star shaped device will come off. The star shaped device is to ensure that the axle nut doesn't loosen. Under the star shaped device is the axle nut, standard 30mm hexagonal nut.

here is a tip if you trying to remove it at home without power tools

don't jack up the car,
dont' loose any lugnut, caliper/brake.
remove cotter pin,
use at least 1/2" drive braker bar or ratchet, 6 point 30mm socket, 3/8 wil break before the nut loose.
use a long 6 to 8 ft extension pipe $6 to $10, from fence department from lowes or home depot.
have someone sit in driver seat, step on brake padel hard, and make sure the socket is all the way in the nut, it should come loose.
i did it with 2 or 3 ft extension pipe, believe me, wasted my time and energy, won't loose until i use longer pipe for leverage.

I've got air tools

30mm for sure? Reason I'm asking is that I've never seen that star looking safety nut in my cars before. I've done axles plenty of times though.
