4th Generation 1998 Camry: Open Door Indicator, Ignition Light Illuminated

Hi

Newbie here.

Recent issue on my 1998 Camry (Have had it a few weeks):
  • The Orange 'Door Open' light on my dashboard stays lit even though all doors are closed
  • The blue light aroung the ignition stays lit all the time
  • After turning the car off, I thought my doors used to unlock automatically for me. They no longer unlock automatically for me. I need to manually press the unlock button.
Would a failed 'Door Lock Key Switch' cause all three issues? If yes, what is the estimated cost for a door lock key switch and how long should it take "the average car mechanic" to replace this part?

Thanks
Charlie

I would first suspect one of the door switches. These are the little spring loaded switches at each door that pop out when that door is open. One of them may be sticking open or has rusted enough on the back side so it is showing up open when it's not. It's a simple contact switch that closes the circuit when the door is open. Rust on the back side can also create a path that simulates opening of the door and closing of the switch. Check all 4 of them for smooth operation and possible rust. I would first check the one on the driver's door. It get's the most use and wear. Sometimes removing them and wire brushing the rust away from the back side along with a little dielectric grease can work wonders on these switches in lubing them and keeping away further rust. A little WD-40 can also help a stuck switch.
