3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've been having some suspension noise coming from the rear passenger side of my 99 Gen 4 - mostly when I make right turns at any speed. The noise sounds similar to running on a flat tire - not the typical popping or clunking other users have described on the forum. As I start to investigate the noise, any particular area I should focus on?
Bushings seem fine, but will be jacking up the car to get a closer look.
Thanks.

Reason: Year
^ What J.Vincent said, only try rocking the tire side to side ( with your hands at 3:00 and 9:00). It could be your rear lateral control rod #2 is gone. That's the one closest to the rear of the car and it also contains the sleeve for the rear alignment adjustment. The bushings on them go out all the time and you can get a clunk under various conditions. Also remove the tire and check the sway bar end link for play.
Thanks guys. I jacked it up and moved the tires around a bit. No real play or noise when I did it.
I'm leaning towards the rear lateral arm but unsure yet.
Thanks for all your help.
I've got similar symptoms, but not necessarily while turning, just while driving, even on a relatively smooth road.
I jacked the car, and hit everything that has a joint with a rubber mallet. When I get to Suspension Arm #2 (rearmost) I hear a metal on metal noise. When I rotate the link, I get the same result.
When driving, however, it almost sounds like the upper strut mount is loose and banging around. However, I replaced the entire strut/spring assembly less than 10K ago.

Going for a few more rides to try and diagnose.
If you are hearing the noise when you rotate that rear lateral control rod number 2, then it needs to be replaced and the alignment redone. Do a search on this forum, since someone recently came up with a place cheaper than the dealer for that part. From a dealer, that part runs around $160.
Incidently, when posting it's best to give the year of your car, which engine, and how many miles are currently on the car.
try tightening the nut for the strut, i did a search when this happened to me.(sounded like the car was about to fall apart) apparently it is common for them to loosen??? worth a go. all you have to do is undo the nut on the bottom part that holds the stationary back rest in back seat and you're in.
