3rd Generation Brake pads gen 3

Hey guys,

My brake pads are going bad (only after 5 months), so wondering do you guys suggest OEM Toyota Brake Pads for $67 bucks after tax or aftermarket ones?

IF Aftermarket what brands do you guys suggest?

Thanks.

I did search the forums all I found was how to change'em and one or two referring to some brand called "hawk" or "hawx"

Eh I'm not sure what pads I've got on the Camry ATM (parents gave me a brake job while I was away this summer)

But we've had Monroe pads on the Explorer for the last few years, about 10000 miles (maybe a bit more, not 100%)
and they are damn-near indestructible, have no problem stopping a 4000lb SUV, and will probably be good for another 5-6000 miles (might be more, seeing as it's my dad's DD right now, and he's not exactly a racer )

just my 2 cents

btw, Monroe's are a Canadian Tire brand (i think)

I bought my brake pads from toyota for my 96 camry, only lasted a new hundred miles!. The pads that were glued to the metal backing wasn't glued properly or well and fell off. Thought it was a defect for that, but my 07 camry, the pads only lasted 20k! Not much braking and never slammed on the brakes!. My 96 corolla has aftermarket ones and they look new, and i driven it 30k+ and i speed and brake a lot and brake hard with them.

Corolla is a lighter car, needs less stopping power.

Just for your info, my 98 Camry CE (14" wheels) uses same front brakes as some 6th gen celica's and 6 to 7 gen corollas.

So, what do you guys think?

OEM vs After market?

Any good After market brakes that you can name?
OEM are $67.

For typical driving I'd go with Akebono ProAct ceramics. Unless your calipers are sticking or things like that you should be able to get >50K miles out of them easy.

Toyota ones supposedly are cheaper Akebonos (lower friction rating, EE). They might have gone back to FF. Don't know. I'd just get Akebonos to be sure.

You can also go Hawk HPS, LTS, ceramic. Stop on a dime kind of performance. But I heard you need to break them in properly or they'll squeal like a pig.

HPS is street performance carbon metallic. LTS is heavy duty, like taxi service pads. Their ceramic is supposedly a higher performance version.

i'm gonna tell you a secret - only 3 left in stock as store says LOL - i think they are cheating on this hehe. I love Hawk HPS brake pads and would recommend them to anybody just like i've been recommended some time ago.

to match / beat OEM price, follow this link, only $56 shipped - that's what i did for my car model
Amazon Amazon

they seem to be better than OEM per stopping power and are way better than my former aftermarket Wagner Thermo Quiet something...

BTW: here is official Hawk Performance website:
http://www.hawkperformance.com/

ah, one more thing. follow manufacturer "burn in" instruction to the letter. if you do this properly they will be virtually noiseless.

Well my 07 camry brakes were recalled. My old ones in the front only lasted what 15k or less. I got the fronts for free, YAY, but for some reason they did not replace the rear ones and had to pay 250 dollars when they died on me wit 30k driven. Why argue about why they did not replace the rear when replacing the front ones. The old pads are awesome and they last, but the new ones do not. I hope and I think they fixed their brake pad problems.

Those of you getting only 20-30k miles may have dragging brakes or are riding the pedal.
i think all depends on terrain, driving style and lots of conditions (e.g. imperfect calipers). i bought my car with original pads at 35k. once i got to 45k and there was less than 10% left, so the shop forced me to do the brakes with them while putting new tires on.

aftermarket wagner last another 20k but it was worn so about 1/3 left - replaced them mostly because they started squealing a little.

Well, looks like Hawk HPS for performance braking. For that price no sense going Akebono ProAct. Combine this with Brembo or Raybestos Advanced Technology rotors should do the trick.

No Gen 5 Toyota pads/rotors.
