Oil change questions

hi,
I have some question on a 2000 V6 Camry

1. How many quarts does this engine type take?
2. What are the torque specs for the oil nut?
3. If I buy the 5 quart and have oil left over can i keep it for the next change or does it go bad?

Thanks

I have a 2001 V6 and I use 5 qts per oil change. I think it says in the book 4.7 per change, so I just go with 5. It comes out perfect on the stick every time. You can buy the 5qt jugs at Wal Mart for pretty cheap also.

As for the torque spec on the drain plug, I don't know what it is, but I just snug it up. You get a feel for it. If you do end up buying at Wal Mart, get full synthetic, it's cheap there and well worth the price. I use Castrol if I get it from Wal Mart, or Royal Purple when I can.

Oh, and oil sitting in the bottle will not go bad. Hope this helps.

For future issues, please make sure to search the forum first and also check the stickies at the top of the page which contain this information. Thanks!

As for the extra oil question, keep it...the oil won't go bad.

hi
I have been using 10W30 and 5W30 for the longest time. Is it advisable to change to full synthetic now? Will it cause any leaks.
thanks

I always believe in thickest approved dino oil for the temperature range for these engines. These engines are not meant for extended drains like European engines. Change it every 3000 miles with a good filter to get rid of contaminants.

If you have concerns about engine sludge, then go Mobil-1 every 5000 miles but no more. Fenixus changed over to syn recently. I don't think he has any problems. 5000 miles is the maximum between oil changes Toyota has updated in 2004 for all its cars, new or old, because of sludge concerns. Check toyota.com for schedule yourself.

You can use a good filter like the Purolator PureOne 10241 (I'd go larger 20195), Bosch 3422, Motorcraft FL400S, or get the oversized dealer filter for the V6 and truck I4. I wouldn't use the cheaper Premium Plus line for budget customers. I don't really care for Denso oil filters either. I think they stink, but YMMV.

Bosch bought Purolator, so their Champion Labs-made filters on the shelves should be phased out with Purolators. The FL400S is a Purolator. A very good deal.
