Repetitive clacking sound when engine is around 2000 rpm

When ever I push the accelerator pedal down, when the engine is around 2000 rpm, something from under the hood makes a repetitive sound - as if a belt is hitting something. At higher rpms it dies down but there is still some sound although not as bad. i have posted the sound clip on youtube so that somebody here can listen to it and give me some ideas as to what could be wrong.

Thanks in advance.

I do not think there is any loss of power. It seems to be doing ok. I drove 50 miles in it today, and it was ok. But I am worried that this noise (which seems to be getting worse) may be damaging something.

Thanks.

I think you need to do some investigation. Like draining the oil and looking for metal pieces. If none consider pulling the oil pan and checking the bearing caps, removing the valve cover and checking the valve train. Its hard to tell from the clip bc of the ambient noise but that sounds like mechanical failure to me. Good luck.

Is this coming from under the timing cover?? How long ago was the timing belt changed?

The I4 doesn't have an automatic tensioner, and the timing belt will stretch with time (~50K miles). So that's one of the possible areas to look into.

You can try the mechanic stethoscope, a very long screwdriver, or a garden hose. Be careful of moving engine parts.

It also sounds like you don't have to rev it. It's there at idle speed?

Check your dog bone mount to see if it worn to scraps. Check all the mounts while your at it

could be alot of movement from the engine. Just a possibility

it sounds internal.. i want to say piston internal but most likely that motor either has to get opend and fixed or just replaced.

if that is a 5sfe you have bad rod bearings and you wont get more than 100 miles out of it without catastrophic engine failure by that i mean a piston flying through the oil pan i have blown 2 5sfe's with that same noise

does the oil pressure light come on?
does it make this noise with a load on the engine?

your temp fix would be replacement rod bearings and studs
better off either getting a replacement engine and hoping for the best

Yeah definitely stop driving it, your just killing any hopes of the engine being salvageable.

Sounds like a piston wants to see the outside world.

Ive heard a water pump make a similar clatter but it was much much quieter.

that certainly sounds like a lower end bearing to me. depending on how bad everything is worn, it might be able to be salvageable, but less likely the more you drive it. plus there is the whole throwing a rod through the block thing too that will most likely happen eventually.

Good prognosis by everybody. It was indeed the 3rd engine lower bearing. And to add to the problems the damage to the engine is beyond repair. The cost estimate to rework is about $7000. So I have at this point decided to park the car in the drive way and not worry about fixing it.
